Job Change Tracking: Follow Your Champions to Their Next Company

Job change tracking finds the people who already bought from you, or fought for you, when they land somewhere new. We set it up inside the Apollo.io you already pay for, then follow up by email and LinkedIn. No separate tool, no second contract.

How It Works

How Job Change Tracking Works

01

Load the people worth following

We get your customers, past customers and champions saved as contacts in Apollo.io, from your CRM or a CSV. Apollo.io only tracks job changes for saved contacts, so this list is the foundation.

02

Turn on the job change workflow

We switch on job change updates and build a "Contact changed jobs" workflow in your Apollo.io. It finds the person at the new company, adds them to a list and starts the right sequence. Automated, or held for your review first. Your choice.

03

Follow up on LinkedIn

The same people get a connection request from your managed LinkedIn workspace, powered by HeyReach. Accepts and replies sync back to Apollo.io, and a reply ends the email sequence.

Why It Works

Why Job Change Tracking Beats a Cold List

A champion who moves takes your story with them. They know what your product fixed, they trust it, and in a new role they want early wins. That is a warm conversation at a company you could not reach before.

It cuts the other way too. When a champion leaves a customer account, the relationship there is at risk. The same tracking flags the exit, so your account team can meet whoever took the seat before renewal comes up.

This is champion tracking without a new tool. The data sits in Apollo.io. What most teams lack is the setup and someone acting on every move, every week.

Who we track

  • Current customer users, admins and buyers
  • Past customers and churned accounts
  • Champions from closed-won deals
  • Closed-lost contacts who liked you but lost the budget
  • Sponsors on open deals, so you know when a deal loses its champion
Inside Apollo.io

Apollo.io Job Change Alerts, Set Up to Act

Apollo.io already watches your saved contacts for job changes. Most teams never switch it on, or switch it on and let the alerts pile up. We set it up with you on a recorded working session: the settings that allow job change updates, the Job change filter on your customer lists, and a workflow that acts on each move.

The workflow runs on Apollo.io's "Contact changed jobs" trigger. It can update the contact with the new job or create a new record at the new company, add the person to a list, give the original owner a task, and start a sequence written for someone who already knows you. Job change updates use Apollo.io credits on paid plans, so we cap how many run each week.

The full build is in our tutorial on targeting past customers with job changes in Apollo.io. Watch it and build it yourself, or have us set it up with you.

The LinkedIn Check

Apollo.io Data Can Lag. So We Check LinkedIn Too.

The common knock on Apollo.io job change data is speed. Apollo.io updates a record when it captures a change and checks its whole database monthly, so some moves take time to show up. LinkedIn profiles are self-reported and can be out of date too. Neither source is enough alone.

So we use both. Every time we refill a LinkedIn campaign on our managed workspace, each person is checked against LinkedIn and Apollo.io's latest work history before anyone is messaged. When both sources agree someone has left, they are held back instead of getting a message meant for a company they no longer work at. They become a record to follow to the new company.

What happens to someone who moved

  • Held back from the LinkedIn campaign
  • Finished in any active Apollo.io email sequence
  • Added to a list in your Apollo.io for re-enrichment
  • Followed to the new company when they were a customer or champion

A UserGems Alternative Inside the Apollo.io You Already Pay For

Dedicated champion tracking tools such as UserGems do this job well. They are also a separate contract, often five figures a year. For a team already on a paid Apollo.io plan, most of the job change data is in the account today.

We use that data, add the LinkedIn check and follow-up a single source cannot give you, and run the play with you. One system of record, one data bill, and a job change tracker your team actually works.

Job Change Tracking FAQ

What does job change tracking include? +

Three parts. A saved list of the people worth following, such as customers, past customers and champions. Apollo.io job change alerts and a workflow that acts on each move. And outreach at the new company by email and LinkedIn, with the original relationship owner kept in the loop.

Does Apollo.io have job change alerts? +

Yes. Apollo.io flags saved contacts who change jobs, and its Job change filter finds contacts who have moved since you saved them. Updating a contact with the new job uses credits on paid plans. A "Contact changed jobs" workflow can then add the person to a list, create a task or start a sequence automatically.

How do you track job changes on LinkedIn? +

LinkedIn shows job changes in your feed, and Sales Navigator job change alerts cover leads you have saved there, but someone still has to watch and act by hand. We check every person in a LinkedIn campaign against LinkedIn and Apollo.io's latest work history at each refill, and the people who moved land in your Apollo.io as a list.

What is champion tracking? +

Champion tracking follows the people who pushed for your product. When they move, you reach them at the new company, where they already trust you. When they leave a customer, you know that account needs a new relationship before renewal.

Is this a UserGems alternative? +

For teams already paying for Apollo.io, yes. UserGems is a dedicated tool with its own contract. We use the job change data already in your Apollo.io, add a LinkedIn check and follow-up, and run it with you. At very large contact volumes with CRM-wide automation, a dedicated tool still earns its price.

Can I track job changes in Clay instead? +

You can, on Clay's paid Launch plan (October 2026 pricing), with every record counted against Actions and Data Credits, and a higher Actions tier to buy as your watch list grows. In Apollo.io, the job change data sits next to the contacts and sequences that act on it. We set it up there and add the LinkedIn follow-up.

How fast does Apollo.io catch a job change? +

Apollo.io does not publish a detection time per contact. It updates records when it captures a change and runs monthly checks across its database. That is why we also check against LinkedIn before anyone in a LinkedIn campaign is messaged.

Are the follow-ups automated or reviewed by a person? +

Your choice, per client and per signal. Apollo.io workflows can enroll people automatically or create a review task first. Many teams review champion touches by hand, because the list is small and the message is personal.

What are job change signals worth compared to other signals? +

They grow with deal size. In the 2026 State of B2B GTM Report, 11% of companies under $5k ACV act on champion movements, against 31% at $5k to $50k and 35% above $50k. The bigger the deal, the more a warm relationship is worth.
